2 Days Left to Support in 2016!

lgbt-rights-doug-hinckleIn the new year, our diverse LGBTQ community, women and our community-at-large will be facing many public policy and cultural challenges which will call upon us all to actively participate and donate funds to various causes. As we witnessed, one of the clearest take-aways from the 2016 election, is the crucial role of “the Story”—which highlights the importance of the dissemination of facts, history, education, point of view, and what aspects of our humanity we choose as our collective narrative. The critical role of “the Story” has always been understood by our diverse LGBTQ and women’s communities, as it has been our documentary’s mission to tell our story of empowerment and visibility, even before this election year.

We have always understood the importance of our collective voice and visibility, and the documenting of our history from our point of view as contributions towards social change. As we have witnessed in our lifetime, the proliferation of a narrative (especially through art), can influence culture-at-large towards greater empathy and enlightenment, changing public opinion which can then influence public policy. The avalanche of support in last year’s Supreme Court ruling which legalized same-sex marriage is a clear example of that, as is the history of ACT-UP, which we see as connected. But the war is not over as we have witnessed this year, where legislation is threatened of being overturned, undoing many of the hard fought rights we won as LGBTQ people and women. We also saw a rise of hate crimes including the unfathomable massacre at the Orlando Pulse nightclub. We still have a long way to go, and we have to remain vigilant.

There are so many pressing issues and critical organizations to support. And we ask that if you are in a position to support our documentary film project about women’s empowerment and the preservation of LGBTQ history and its narrative of activism and strength, any donation will directly impact the making of the film, and will be tax-deductible through our fiscal sponsor, Women Make Movies. This year will be an important year in reaching our goal to finish this film, in which funding will play a crucial role. Your support will make a difference.

We wish you a warm and festive New Year. Thank you always for your continued support. Onward and upward to 2017. We have a lot of work ahead. See you in the new year.
