From “PARIS IS BURNING” to Back2Tabac’s HOUSE OF EDWIGE Xtravaganza—NYC PRIDE 2016
We are thrilled to announce that Cesar Valentino, formerly of the “House of Ninja”—immortalized in the seminal film, “Paris is Burning” by Café Tabac alumna Jennie Livingston—will be BRINGING IT with his dancers to the HOUSE OF EDWIGE Back to Tabac 2016 NYC Pride Extravaganza! This year’s Back to Tabac fundraiser will have an early ’90s theme, and will feature a great lineup including Cesar & Co’s featured Vogue performance. DJs for the night include Belinda Becker, Lauren Flax of CREEP, and Whitney Day. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided by Indochine NY with complimentary cocktails served 6-9PM. Other unannounced surprises await! This year’s event is dedicated to the late Edwige Belmore, for which the event is titled after, who was a beloved member of our Café Tabac community.
Cesar Valentino is an integral part of vogue-ing’s rich history as an original founding member of the “House of Ninja” in 1986, who then was Father of the “House of Magnifique,” and the last house he danced for and was Father of, the “House of L’Amour.” Starting in 1983, parallel to the dance form’s magnificent rise from its roots in the underground ballroom and clubs, he was not only a fixture in the scene, but he went on to win several coveted trophies, and appeared in the award-winning documentary, “Paris is Burning,” and Diane Martel’s “The House Of Tres.”
In 1989 he toured Europe on Malcolm McLaren’s “Deep In Vogue” tour and appeared in numerous music videos (Toni Braxton, Carmen Electra, K7s, etc) and has since performed, taught workshops, and served as a judge at Balls all over the world. His peers honored him in 1991 with the Marcel Christian Legend award and he is widely celebrated for the grace and precision of his style, reflecting Vogue’s origins.
He currently teaches a wildly popular class on voguing at Alvin AiIey in NYC. Cesar is NYC royalty. All Hail Cesar!
