We hope you were lucky enough to have caught Mickalene Thomas’ recent scene-stealing major solo exhibition, “Origin of the Universe,” at the Brooklyn Museum! Or one of her numerous international exhibitions. If not, we have an incredible announcement and unveiling to make today. This collage you see here is the first major art auction piece for our upcoming #BACK2TABAC #NYCPRIDE2015 FUNDRAISER EVENT Sponsored by MAC Cosmetics, created and donated by Mickalene Thomas! It features her partner and muse Racquel Chevremont and is titled “Racquel Sitting in Chair with White Shoes, 2015.”
You will have a chance to own your very own work of art through our fundraiser event’s auction by this major artist, who is represented by Lehmann Maupin and is shaking up the art world. She is best known for her collage-inspired paintings, embellished with rhinestones, enamel, and colorful acrylics. Her depictions of African American women explore a spectrum of black female beauty and sexual identity while constructing images of femininity and power. Her work is included in major collections worldwide, here in New York, in the Guggenheim and Whitney Museums, and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
We are also extremely proud to announce Mickalene Thomas and Racquel Chevremont on the event’s HOST Committee. Their presence and support has been so meaningful to us at this stage of the project, and we are grateful to have two such incredible women increase the force of our team.
